Rise in gas and electricity prices

British Gas has stunned households across the UK by announcing a rise in gas and electricity prices of 18% and 16% from the 18th August 2011 just eight months after it raised its prices by 6.9% (or £43) for gas and 6.7% (£28) for electricity. Adding about £192 to the average annual dual fuel bill, increasing from £1,096 to £1,288 in total, within a year its customers will have seen their bills rise by £258 or 25%.

The British Gas managing director of services and commercial, Chris Jansen, says he is happy for customers to email him at chris.jansen@britishgas.co.uk

  1. Price rises will cause even more misery for households, which are struggling as wages fail to keep pace with inflation. Richard Lloyd, executive director of consumer campaigner Which? Says ‘‘Many people are already having to cut back on essentials because of the rising cost of living, and with energy bills rising further, this could be a cold winter for many’’. Energy regulator Ofgem has called for the industry to be overhauled after it found the ‘‘big six’’ companies put up prices more quickly than they reduced them when costs fall, accused them of ‘‘failing to play it straight’’ with consumers.

  2. It’s time the utilities such as gas, electricity, water and public transport were taken back into social-ownership and became the property of the people of Britain again, rather than being owned by multinational corporations.

  3. Rise in gas and electricity prices – will this become the Tory/Liberal coalitions poll-tax?
