Nuclear Crisis what Nuclear Crisis?

Nuclear Crisis in Japan now graded equivalent to Chernobyl as strontium found in soil near Fukushima Daiichi. Hidehiko Nishiyama, a deputy director-general of the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) has said that the severity of the incident moves from level 5 to 7 based on cumulative quantities of radiation released.

"Although the level has been raised to 7 today, it doesn't mean the situation today is worse than it was yesterday, it means the event as a whole is worse than previously thought," says John Price a former member of the Safety Policy Unit at the UK's National Nuclear Corporation.

A level 7 incident means a major release of radiation with a widespread health and environmental impact, while a 5 level is a limited release of radioactive material, with several deaths, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). "Radiation released into the atmosphere peaked in March but the amount now has fallen considerably," said Hidehiko Nishiyama.

Lam Ching-wan, a chemical pathologist at the University of Hong Kong and member of the American Board of Toxicology, says the level of radiation was harmful "It means there is damage to soil, ecosystem, water, food and people. People receive this radiation. You can't escape it by just shutting the window".

So what’s the way forward for our energy needs in the 21st century?

  1. Experts warn Fukushima is worse than Chernobyl. Contamination of the ocean within the 10-mile zone of the nuclear power plant is due to the fact that some of the reactor nuclear decay products made it to the ocean, rather than to the air, as was the case in Chernobyl in 1986.

  2. According to Maxim Shingarkin Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Natural Resources, currents take harmful agents to great distances, so the seafood and fish that are caught in the contaminated currents even in other parts of the world may still prove a health hazard.

  3. Tests in California found that the blue-fin tuna caught in coastal waters were contaminated, according to the globalresearchreport.com portal. Also levels of caesium-137 has also grown along the entire length of the US West Coast, the radioactive caesium was found in local berries and mushrooms. Meanwhile, local residents have reported more frequent bird deaths recently.
